Lactate Dehydrogenase (Ldh) Test is an enzyme that nearly all living cells have. LDH is responsible for catalyzing the conversion of lactate to pyruvic acid and back. In simple terms it converts sugar into energy in the body.

If you happen to have elevated LDH levels, it may indicate some form of tissue damage. This is because when tissues are damaged they release more LDH causing the LDH levels to be elevated in your bloodstream.

As mentioned above, one of the reasons for elevated LDH levels is tissue damage. Other causes of raised LDH levels could be:

This LDH test will help your doctor diagnose if you have tissue damage, monitor its progress and determine whether treatment is working. This can also help monitor and help in diagnosis of certain cancers. The body fluid(not blood) levels can also be evaluated through the LDH test.

This test alone is not sufficient to determine where the tissue damage is.

Serum LDH test

The serum LDH test is more specific and can help determine the cause of elevated LDH levels. 

For the LDH blood test, in rare cases you may experience:

• Bleeding
• Brusing
• Infection
• Soreness

If a lumbar puncture was performed, you may experience:

• Headache
• Infection
• Bleeding
• Numbness

If the LDH blood levels are elevated, it usually indicates some type of tissue damage. It could mean that you have:

• Hemolytic anemia
• Pernicious anemia
• Infections
• Sepsis
• Intestinal and lung infarction
• Acute kidney disease
• Acute liver disease
• Acute muscle injury
• Pancreatitis
• Bone fractures
• Testicular cancer, lymphoma or other cancers

The LDH blood levels if elevated can also indicate that your body is not responding to treatment for cancer.

The LDH normal range at different ages:

• Newborns: 160-450 U/L
• Infants: 100-250 U/L
• Children: 60-170 U/L
• Adults: 100-190 U/L

For cerebrospinal fluid, the normal range for newborns is 70 U/L and for adults is 40 U/L.

High LDH levels may indicate an infection or inflammation in the central nervous system. 

Elevated LDH does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong. Your doctor is the only one who should interpret the results and he/she may even order more tests such as ALT, AST or ALP to be sure of the diagnosis.
